How your baby develops

First shoes

Once your baby starts walking, your mind may turn to the thought of shoes. There are some fantastically cute shoes for babies in the shops, but the most important thing is that they fit properly.

Giving your baby healthy feet for life starts with his first pair of shoes - here are some points to consider when that time arrives:

• Get your baby's feet measured about a month after he first starts walking. Shoes need to be fitted for width as well as length, so always go to a shop where all dimensions of his feet will be measured each time you go.

• Babies feet can grow very fast - drop into the shoe shop to get them measured every six to eight weeks to make sure that his shoes don't get too tight if he has a growth spurt.

• Make sure that his socks keep pace with his growing feet. Socks that are too tight can do a lot of damage.
