SLEEPING

In the first days and weeks after the birth, your baby will try to persist with their individual sleep pattern, waking whenever it suits him or her. Gradually, your baby will begin to fit in with your schedule. By the time your baby is three months old, he or she may well be sleeping about 10 hours a night - even if this is broken - with another five hours during the day, often in two distinct naps, morning and afternoon.

Everyone has their own point of view when it comes to sleep issues and no one approach is right. Complex emotional ties may make the supposedly simple act of leaving your baby to sleep a bit more difficult.

Many women are happiest fitting in with their baby's pattern, feeling that sleeping together - as mothers and babies do all over the world - is best. If you're inclined to agree.

However, if you believe that your baby should not dictate your sleep patterns, there are some things that you can do to create a routine that will suit everybody.
